Track Review: Walkin By Denzel Curry

Denzel Curry is back with a new single off of his fifth studio album, Melt My Eyez, See Your Future. The rumors regarding any information leading up to this track, "Walkin," were almost non-existent so there was a lot mystery and speculation around what direction Curry would take on this forthcoming project. "Walkin" shows that Denzel Curry continues to evolve his music, attempting to push the boundaries with what he is capable of and does so with rigorous passion and spirit. The track sees Denzel reminisce on the struggles of life, describing his ordeal as "I'm killing off my demons cause my souls worth redeeming." The production through the first half is light and has an airy, spacious funk about it thanks to rich percussion, quirky little piano chords and gorgeous use of female backing vocals. Of course, Denzel has to switch up the beat, so the last half of the track sees a change to up-tempo drums with a more trap-like kick. The backing vocals also become more prominent and begin to warp Denzel's impeccable flow, melding together as the pace of his lyrics increase with the overall intensity of the song.

A music video was released alongside "Walkin" as well and shows the artistic direction from Curry vastly improves upon every aspect of the track itself, with the video portraying a lone gunslinger, wandering a collision of sci-fi worlds like Star Wars and Cowboy Bebop. Curry's love for movies and comic culture is well known, so a thematic overlay on "Walkin" that sees him as an outlaw type figure navigating a wasteland of treachery, is a perfect wheelhouse for him to delve into. There are other elements as well that further cinematize this track, such as the rugged aesthetic that is akin to revered classic westerns, or even some scenes that hint to legendary Japanese director Akira Kurosawa and his elegant, yet visceral samurai films. The female vocals heard in conjunction with the music video become more serene, suggestive even more so in portraying Denzel Curry as a man with a higher calling, whose raps are weighted heavy and one whose lifelong struggles are shared by those in the present and will be by those in the future.

Score: 9/10
